Travel light

Oh the joys of carrying a large handbag crammed with heavy contents which we seldom use.

Ok well if we really insist on hauling around a 5 pound weight on a daily basis, we certainly can’t when we go off on our travels. First let’s take an in depth look at one of the heaviest items in that bag.

The wallet

I’ve had my wallet stolen on more than one occasion and that’s made 10 times worse because instead of taking out most of the items I don’t need when travelling, my purse still contained my life!

  1. Credit cards – various
  2. Debit cards – various
  3. Cash - £140
  4. Store cards – various
  5. Loyalty cards – too many
  6. Gym membership card – a couple
  7. Business cards - lots
  8. Dry cleaning slips - 2
  9. Coffee loyalty cards - plenty
  10. Photographs - precious

Then there’s the make-up bag filled with all sorts of heavy goodies;

Make-up bag

  1. Lipstick – 5 shades
  2. Lip gloss – 2 shades
  3. Eyeshadow
  4. Eyeliner
  5. Brow definer
  6. Concealer
  7. Foundation
  8. Bronzer
  9. Mirror etc....

Then come the individual items;

  1. Mobile phone
  2. Keys
  3. Diary
  4. Notebook
  5. Glasses
  6. Sunglasses
  7. Pen
  8. Perfume
  9. Hand cream
  10. Hair accessories
  11. Nail file
  12. Tissue etc...

clutter, travel light, essentials

If all of the above is stolen, it is understandable if we go into melt down, stress levels go through the roof and the holiday has an enormous black cloud appear on the horizon.

So how can we protect ourselves against this and ensure a relaxing, stress free time?

The trick is to take the time before travel to really think about what you’ll be using while you’re away.

From your purse probably no more than 3 essential items;

  1. Credit card - 1
  2. Debit card - 1
  3. Cash - as little as possible

From your make-up bag

  1. Lipstick – 1 nude shade
  2. Mirror – small travel size
  3. Eyeliner/shadow compact

And the rest

  1. Mobile phone
  2. Sunglasses
  3. iPad/Kindle
  4. Passport for the airport

Everything else can be safely left at home, ensuring a light bag and peace of mind.

Once you’ve streamlined the contacts of your bag it’s time to decide on the bag a wallet you’re going to take away on your dream holiday.

Preferably a small bag and one which can be worn in various ways - around the waist for the day time excursions and across the body for the evening promenade. Choose a colour which goes with anything, this doesn’t necessarily mean black or brown, there are some gorgeous bright lemons and blues which look stunning and make a real statement.

For the purse, small again with a couple of slots for cards and change. The icing on the cake would be a purse which clips-inside the bag for maximum peace of mind!

It really will be worth taking the time to plan ahead before travelling, save yourself the trouble of carrying a heavy bag and stressing about precious stuff being stolen.

Relax and enjoy your travels x
